Share Your Harvest
Help Combat Food Insecurity in Our Community!
A good year in your garden often yields more fruit and vegetables than your family can consume or even preserve. Don’t let it go to waste!
View a listing of food banks and food pantries in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area that are eager to receive fresh, locally grown produce from gardens like yours. You will find details about where to deliver your homegrown goodness and when it can be received.
When you share your harvest, please provide food of the quality that you and your family would enjoy. Fruits and vegetables should be freshly picked, not overly ripe, and clean. This will help avoid spoilage and crushing before the food can be distributed.
Help the Hungry with Your Garden Plan
As a gardener, you can plan ahead to help the hungry. Plant an extra row at the start of the season, and share the results with a food bank or food pantry when the harvest comes in. What could be more healthful and nutritious for our neighbors in need?
When you start plants from seeds, grow some additional seedlings to share with community gardens. Also, donate any extra seeds you may have to our Seed Library. Each year, we distribute seeds to community and school gardens across our area. Contact our Horticulture Help Desk at albemarlevcehelpdesk@gmail.com for details.
Enjoy the Satisfaction of Sharing What You Grow
Gardeners by nature are generous and love to share their bounty with others. By giving what you grow, and by encouraging your garden friends to join you, you will help bring people together in a common purpose to decrease food waste and end food insecurity in our community.
