Many people have not heard of much less know what IPM is. The EPA simply states “Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an environmentally friendly, common sense approach to controlling pests.” The University of California provides a more technical definition: “[IPM] is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant varieties”.
Several local institutions are implementing IPM plans in place of using heavy chemical solutions for pest control. Charlottesville’s city council recently heard a report on the status of the year old official policy: Charlottesville’s IPM. Earlier this spring, UVA Today also reported on the IPM efforts around grounds.
