Celebrate International Compost Awareness Week

Join PMG to Celebrate International Compost Awareness Week: May 3-9, 2020

Compost is the best natural soil amendment there is. It’s easy and inexpensive to make from kitchen and yard waste and is available commercially. It reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and it promotes easy water infiltration into soil while improving drainage and preserving moisture during dry periods. It also keeps organic wastes out of landfills, saving space and reducing methane emissions. It is truly a pure good thing.

May 3-9 is the 25th anniversary of International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), which is being celebrated with the theme: “Soil Loves Compost”. The Piedmont Master Gardeners and the Charlottesville community are committed to promoting composting and providing a variety of ways for citizens to participate in composting activities. For guidance on how you can compost at home, check out our Garden Shed newsletter article Backyard Composting With Practical Tips From the Pros. To understand how organic matter generally, and compost in particular, enriches soil, try The Soil Food Web: Nature’s Way to Build Healthy Soils. To learn how to participate in composting activities in the C-ville area, take a look at https://www.compostcharlottesville.com. And for information on ICAW, go to https://www.compostfoundation.org/ICAW/ICAW-Home. This is a great opportunity for everyone to join PMG and the movement to build healthy soil the natural way. We hope you will join us!
